British lecturer advises NDC group to take stand against violations of Yemeni airspace

27 April 2013 /

On Saturday, the British Reprieve Organization recommended that the NDC National Issues and Transitional Justice Working Group take a stand against air strikes which violate Yemeni airspace under the pretext of fighting terrorism.

Cori Crider, the organization’s legal director, gave the group a presentation on the war against terrorism and argued that there should be laws to prevent violations of Yemen’s airspace.

"Reprieve is monitoring air violations and conveying the truth to the U.S. media about the real number of victims of US drones and warplanes in the country," said Crider.

"We are trying to rectify the distorted image amid a media blackout about the real numbers of victims due to air violations," she said.

She also pointed out that there is also a media blackout about the airbase from where U.S. planes take off to fight terrorism in Yemen.

"All the information we have about this issue is that U.S. drones and planes come from the U.S. bases in Djibouti, Saudi Arabia and the Anad base in South Yemen," she said.

“The only solution to the problem is to amend the Yemeni law to ensure the country's sovereignty and to strengthen the authority vested in the prosecution of Yemeni people suspected of illegal acts,” added Crider.

Following Crider’s lecture, the working group continued its meeting and discussed its committees’ work plans.
