4 February 2014 /

The Regions Committee, tasked with determining the number of regions in a federal state, held on Tuesday a meeting chaired by the Committee's Vice President Khalid Barass.

During the meeting, the committee heard three studies in an effort to get opinions from experts, studies, and specialized researchers. This was in accordance with the Presidential decree forming the committee.

A study under the title "Administrative Redetermination in Yemen and Sharing Financial Resources at Various Levels in a Federal State" was presented by Amin Mohamed al-Maqetari.

Al-Maqetari talked about the current administrative division in the country along with its obstacles, saying that all decisions taken in this regard contributed to disintegrating big cities. He added for this reason there are about 133000 localities in Yemen.

The researcher said that Yemen's new constitution would establish an administrative division based on scientific bases in accordance with the NDC outcomes document.

He also gave some examples of federal states all over the world, saying that 40% of world's population is composed of citizens of 28 states with federal systems. These are stable, successful systems.

Also in today's meeting, the committee heard from a researcher from the private sector, Mazen Mahmoud Aman, a study entitled "Aden as a Center for Development and Economic Revival in the Federal State."

He talked about the importance of the Aden province and its primacy as an economic port and a geographic location can easily draw all kinds of investments. It can be also a commercial, industrial, and tourism place that can offer logistic, marine and air services. He added that the Aden province could become an economic locomotive in the federal state.

Finally the committee listened to a third study under the title " The Special Status of the Federation Capital… international Experiences in Representing and Managing the Federation Capitals'' delivered by Maeen Abdul Malik Saeed.

He talked in his study about the challenges and difficulties facing the Yemeni capital, Sana'a, and then he provided examples of federation capitals.
