NDC members express optimism over resolution of Sa’ada, Southern Issues

29 April 2013 /

Among members of the NDC’s Sa’ada and Southern Issue Working Groups, there is a growing sentiment that meaningful steps have been made towards having the respective issues addressed.

This positive sense became noticeable in the two groups’ meeting halls, where representatives of various political parties finished presenting their understandings of the root causes of both the Sa’ada and Southern issues.

Regarding the Saada issue, Dr. Ezzi Wahb Allah Shuraim said on Monday that his group is now closer to a solution for the Sa’ada issue.

“After all groups presented their understandings of the roots of the Saada issue, I can tell you -and this remains my personal opinion - that this issue has almost been resolved.”

He said a committee had been set up to study all group member impressions and, finally, to develop a united understanding from them. The final understanding would then be carefully “thrashed out,” said Shuraim.

“Based on my reading of all others’ [in the group] understandings on this issue, finding a solution will be a matter of time. We have various clear and convergent impressions here,” he added.

When it comes to the Southern Issue, Dr. Yassin Saeed Noman - the Secretary General of the Yemeni Socialist Party and Deputy Chairman of the NDC - said it was a very positive development that all political groups had put their understandings of the issue on the dialogue table.

Southern Issue group member Qadri Ahmed Haider said there was convergence in terms of understandings of the issue’s roots.

“For the time being, discussions will let us know how much more positive we should feel about our chances of solving the issue,” he said.

After the Southern Movement (Herak) presented its understanding of the root causes of the Southern Issue, Haider said the group’s understanding was well complimented by the impressions of the Yemeni Socialist Party, of which he himself is a member.

“We can say that the Socialist Party spoke about theoretical and knowledge-based aspects, while the Southern Movement spoke about what we can call practical aspects…those which can lay the groundwork for a realistic solution to the issue,” he said.
