Party secretary generals pool ideas at NDC seminar

Yemeni Socialist Party Secretary General and NDC member Yassin Said No’man has said that Yemeni parties are facing numerous challenges which prevent them from operating according to principles of good governance.

“We have not reached states of good governance inside parties yet, but we hope to…especially after we’ve transitioned from ideological institutions to true political institutions based on principles of acceptance and coexistence,” he said during a seminar at a Good Governance Working Group meeting on Monday.

No’man’s comments came during a seminar devoted to hearing from political parties’ secretary generals.

The seminar focused on three topics: challenges and obstructions facing the parties, commitment of the parties to the good governance principles and the parties’ visions for modern civil state.

Sultan Al-Atwani, Secretary General of the Nasserite Unionist Party, said that Yemen’s political landscape had suffered a great deal of distortion both before and after national unification was achieved.

“The challenges which preceded unity included ideological conflicts which led to a crackdown on certain intellectuals and politicians,” he said.

For his part, Sultan Al-Barakani, Secretary General of the General People’s Congress Party, emphasized that a commitment to principles of good governance was needed.

“The Yemeni parties have been subjected to complex difficulties regarding both the comprehension of good governance ethics and practicing of these same ethics on the ground,” he said.
