British military expert Andrew Coredri delivered his third lecture to the Army and Security Working Group on Monday. The lecture concerned the basic requirements and standards needed to build up a nation’s military and security forces.
Coredri reviewed the experiences of a number of countries which Yemenis could potentially learn from, including South Africa and various European Union nations.
“Any security service controlled by an individual is definitely going to be unsuccessful because such a system will be ruled by standards of personal interest or independence,” he said, before adding that all security services must be founded on a national basis.
Working group member and former Interior Minister Rashad Al-Alimi delivered a lecture at the meeting on the obstacles which had transformed the Yemeni army into an inactive institution.
“The bases on which an army is built should include the turning of a new leaf and forgetting of past negativity,” said Al-Alimi.
“The NDC, by way of the Good Governance Working Group, is providing us with the opportunity to discuss key issues - including those with security and civil dimensions.”
