E.U. Ambassador to Yemen: ‘New Yemen’ should be based on tolerance

7 May 2013 /

European Union Ambassador to Yemen Bettina Muscheidt said on Tuesday that Yemen’s National Dialogue Conference was effectively drawing a roadmap for the nation’s citizens.

“Voices which have not been heard for a long time have now found a place in the dialogue conference, where the spirit of tolerance is prevailing,” she said. “It’s an historic moment, to build a new Yemen on new bases. These bases should stem from tolerance in order for there to be a Yemen for all,” said Muscheidt.

According to her, the current political transition and the unique way in which Yemen moved past the pains that came with revolution in 2011 bode well.

She added, however, that “such promises still need to be translated into long-term peace and stability for all Yemeni people - and especially the young”.

Muscheidt urged NDC members to focus on making good use of limited time, saying, “Time is passing quickly and Yemen still must address key development and good governance issues.”

She added, “Yemen is not alone, and the international community is blessing its efforts.”

Relating Yemen’s challenges to those faced by European nations in the past, said, “In Europe, we put our disagreements aside and mobilized our energies to become a prosperous democratic union. We are now united and we would like to share our experience with Yemen. The Yemenis can look forward to a better future together.”
