German Ambassador to Yemen visits NDC’s Southern Issue Working Group

Replying to a question from a group member about the reasons behind the success of German unity, Green said that it took place between wealthy West Germany and East Germany, which itself was not poor.

“That’s why our unification has been very successful.”

“If you want Yemeni unity to continue, just do something with the issues that the people in the south say have not been addressed for 20 years,” he said. “The two committees on land and fired southern employees, which were formed by President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi , were a step forward in the right direction,” he said.

“If the Yemeni people would choose federalism, they should have several regions - six or seven - because it will cost a lot if you have a federal system with many regions,” he said. “I advise Yemen to not copy the experience of any country - but it should have its own style of governance in line with its needs and circumstances,” he said.

At the group’s meeting, German expert Reno Herbert delivered a lecture on federalism and the basic foundations of a state.
