The roles of parties and popular organizations committee - part of the NDC’s Good Governance Working Group - met on Monday with the Shura Council’s rights and freedoms committee.
The two committees discussed how mutual cooperation arrangements could best be made in an effort to fulfill the visions of civil society organizations (CSO). Both parties participated in the discussion with the understanding that their visions and recommendations could play a part in shaping aspects of Yemen’s new constitution.
Shura committee Chairman Muhammad Al-Tayyeb delivered a presentation on CSOs and their social, human and charitable activities.
“Few organizations are concerned with human rights and political issues in practical terms,” he said.
Al-Tayyeb criticized government authorities’ lack of awareness of the number of active CSOs.
“There are about 12,000 registered organizations, yet only hundreds of this number are active,” he said.
For his part, NDC committee Chairman Ahmed Al-Asbahi said the field visits aimed to rectify the situation and lay the groundwork for a new Yemeni state which is committed to all good governance principles.
