Taiz youths demand enactment of transitional justice law

13 May 2013 /

Youths in Taiz governorate have demanded that Yemen’s Transitional Justice Law be enacted as soon as possible.

At the same time, the youths demanded that the law’s fourth provision be amended, which would thereby have the effect of leaving rights violations which occurred prior to 1990 open to investigation.

During a meeting with a team composed of members from the NDC’s National Issues and Transitional Justice Working Group, they also demanded that the issue of enforced disappearances be addressed in the form of a committee with a sole focus on the matter.

In the discussions with NDC members, the Taizi youths criticized the offering of immunity to former president Ali Abdullah Saleh and his aides as part of the Gulf Cooperation Council -brokered power-transfer deal.

Furthermore, they demanded that the families of those who were killed during 2011’s Youth Revolution be cared for. They added that care should also be given to those who were injured or displaced in the same time period.

Yaseen Al-Qubati, head of the NDC team, stressed the importance of enacting a transitional justice law. “

“If this law is not enacted, Yemen will experience a long period of conflict,” he said.

At the meeting, those youths who were present described their vision of how transitional justice should be applied in Yemen.
