Teams from the NDC’s Rights and Freedoms Working Group visited inmates at Sana’a’s Central Prison on Monday.
During their visit, the teams inspected the prison’s various sections and facilities, all the time seeking to learn whether they provided suitable conditions for inmates there.
They also met with prison officials, with whom they discussed rehabilitation programs and the challenges which affect the lives of inmates there.
The prison accommodates about 63 women, 2174 men and 75 juveniles.
Prison Director Muhammad Al-Zalab said that relevant authorities and organizations don’t pay sufficient attention to calls for the prison’s performance to be improved.
Separately, the security team – made up of members from the NDC’s Military and Security Working Group - visited Interior Ministry departments with respective focuses on street patrols, security, illegal drugs, automobile transportation, security guards and VIP protection, the tourist police, family protection, and criminal investigations.
The team listened to proposals from officials on what the latter deemed to be necessary legislative amendments. In turn, the officials were assured that their proposals would be considered when drafting process for Yemen’s new constitution was underway.
