NDC members meet with UNHRC representative

19 May 2013 /

The committees focused on the respective issues of 2011 violations, conflicts and enforced disappearances – all three composed of members from the NDC’s National Issues and Transitional Justice Working Group – discussed the subject of enforced disappearances with United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) representative Laith Abdulaziz on Sunday.

2011 violations Chairman Hamza Al-Kamali said that there is not only a consensus behind efforts to reveal the truth behind enforced disappearances, but there is also a determination to address them.

Abdulaziz said the UNHRC had made supporting transitional justice in Yemen a priority and that human rights are part of transitional justice.

“The UNHRC will organize activities to introduce civil society organizations to transitional justice legislation from May 8 to June 10,” he said.

Furthermore, members of the working group discussed international human rights standards and laws, as well as the UNHRC’s stance towards the immunity which was given to members of Yemen’s former regime, with Abdulaziz.

“The Geneva-based UNHRC rejects the immunity because it is considered to be an abuse of human rights,” said Abdulaziz. “The UNHRC has obtained reports on human rights abuses in Yemen.”

He urged the working group to form fact-finding and complaints committees to address all of the country’s human rights violations.
