The NDC's Independence of Special Entities Working Group hosted Women’s National Committee (WNC) Chairwoman Shafiqa Saeed on Sunday. During her visit, she spoke about the committee, the reasons behind its formation, and which authorities were responsible for making it a reality.

Saeed also spoke about particular areas of focus which are covered by the Supreme Women’s Council, which is headed by the prime minister and counts seven government ministers as members.

She reviewed how the WNC carries out its duties and discussed its aims and the foundations it works with. Saeed also spoke about challenges facing the committee and in what ways its strategies, visions and aims have been hindered.

Looking forward, Saeed described a vision of the WNC’s future role. She told the NDC members in attendance that the committee’s central aim is to achieve complete independence as it performs its duties.

Opening the discussion, participants spoke about the importance of enhancing the role of Yemeni women in society via the establishment of a government apparatus which oversees women’s issues.

Meanwhile, others argued the need for guarantees which would ensure women’s participation in political life and decision-making positions, with the establishment of 30 percent quotas representing a first step in this direction.
