NDC group gives audience to Sa’ada’s displaced

20 May 2013 /

Members of the NDC Rights and Freedoms Working Group have heard directly from displaced citizens who specifically requested an audience with the group for the purpose of requesting an investigation of human rights violations in Sa’ada governorate.

Displaced citizen representatives stated that the violations included killings, arrests and displacement at the hands of Houthis. They stated that there had been more than 130,000 displaced people as a result of Houthi acts and repression and added that there had also been a number of landmine victims.

The representatives asked the working group to conduct field visits to Sa’ada to obtain the release of people who are being detained by Houthis. They also demanded compensation for citizens whose houses had been attacked and occupied.

Abdul Nasser Al-Arabi, Chairman of the political rights and freedoms committee – which is composed of Rights and Freedoms Working Group members – said his committee and the NDC would discuss displaced citizens’ issues in general, and those of citizens in Sa’ada in particular.
