Military and Security committees discuss final reports

28 May 2013 /

On Tuesday, committee members from the NDC’s Military and Security Working Group began discussing their activities over the past two months as preparation for the drafting of committee final reports.

The group has four committees, on army-building, security-building, intelligence systems and retirees, and wrongful terminations and enforced disappearances.

The reports will include details on field visits and summaries of studies, as well as proposed solutions and potential constitutional texts.

Separately, the working group received a lecture from Vice German Ambassador to Yemen Philip Holzapfel on subject of the reunification of Germany’s army.

Holzapfel reviewed the standards by which East and West Germany’s armies were combined, as well as what measures were taken in Germany’s case when it came to addressing the terminations of officers and soldiers.

“Yemen can learn from the German experience when the time comes to write the new constitution,” he said, before adding that “the new constitution should include specific texts on the army and security forces.”
