
On Monday, the NDC’s Good Governance Working Group presented a report on its past two months of activities to conference members in attendance for the NDC’s second plenary meeting.
The report, which was presented by Group Chairwoman Afrah Baduwailan included general goals concerned with fighting corruption, activating access to information legislation, the application of principles of accountability, and studies on the current state of political parties, civil society organizations and of community participation.
Other goals described by Baduwailan included the development of a new constitution and revamped legal system to facilitate justice and equality in Yemen. An emphasis was also placed on increasing public awareness of good governance principles.
Group members also stated that Yemen’s new constitution must not include any provisions which allow for immunity to be conferred upon corrupt officials.
Other constitutional recommendations from the group concern both the independence and transparency of supervisory institutions and bans on arms trafficking and unsanctioned waste disposal.
